The Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children
Highly individualized and tuition-free educational programming focused on the acquisition of life skills for students who are visually impaired with other profound disabilities, many of whom are
medically fragile. The school is dedicated to helping all students gain as much independence as possible so that they can experience positively the companionship of family, friends, and the
community. The school, further, offers assistance to families and serves as a resource to the public.
Serves: Approximately 175 students annually, aged 3 – 21, from more than 200 school districts in 33 counties within the western portion of the Commonwealth.
Vital early intervention evaluation and consultation services through the TODDLER Program for families with infants and toddlers who either are or suspected of being legally blind.
Residential facilities and after-school programming to supplement and enhance the acquisition of skills taught throughout the instructional day.
Specialized instruction and support services such as occupational, physical and communication therapy; adapted physical education and aquatic physical therapy services; individualized dietary
services; orientation and mobility training, and intensive nursing care.
Outreach services to provide critical information, consultation and services to students with visual impairments, school districts, intermediate units and families throughout western
Pennsylvania.
Locally recognized specialists consult with staff and families, in a variety of fields such as: physiatry, psychiatry, psychology and optometry.
